Original Song Project: Morgan Young - This Song For Sale

As I mowed the lawn one day while listening to my iPod, I was struck by commonality of lyrical themes in much of the music to which I was listening. Particularly in the older country songs by Mel TillisJohnny Cash and Willie Nelson. That got me thinking about the world of professional song writers (to point, not performers, just the composers) and their inevitable approach to music not as a passion play, perhaps not even as an art, but most definitely as a commodity to be traded.

The spew of that thought is this song, This Song for Sale. It was one of those spontaneous compositions that took me less than 10 minutes to write. I didn't do much with it for over a year and finally rediscovered it myself. Upon rediscovering it in my dusty memory, I decided I actually liked it. A quick recording of the song and here I am sharing it with you.

I hope you like.

  1. Really nice one with excellent lyrics, the kind of lyrics that beg for closer scrutiny by the listener. I'm particularly fond of the line "It's not long", one of those lines that just seem to fit in nicely.

  2. Interesting you picked that line out. It, in fact, came from an unusual source: every girl with whom you have ever been intimate.

  3. Nice job, Morgan (job, get it?). The Coyote found himself howling right along to this song and gives it 3.5 out of 5 yelps. As far as I'm concerned, your best vocal performance yet. I think you should double the kick drum on the drum track so it goes bump, pop, bump, bump pop. The bump being the kick drum and the pop being the snare. Oh, yeah and maybe add a little reverb on the vocal.

  4. Coyote, thanks for stopping in and giving a yelp.

Flippy, you talked to all three? How about that.

  5. No, just the two girls. That goat wasn't saying anything.

  6. Well, your mom's never been one to talk much.

  7. Thanks Coyote. I have a generous amount of reverb on the vocals. I've come to learn about my vocals, that I can never have enough. As far as the drums go. Good idea. Beyond my drum skills.

    Got anything for to share?

  8. This is a really good song that should be covered by somebody. Seriously, I'd love to hear Dwight Yoakam tackle it. The George Harrison-esque slide part is a nice touch.

  9. Thanks for the kind words Mazz. I'll call Dwight tomorrow and give him a heads up. When do we get a recording from you?

  10. This song really reminds me of the Swell Season. And I love them! Have you ever heard of them?

  11. I did not recognize the name Swell Season, but when I looked them up I realized they were from that movie "Once." I saw that and enjoyed it. I'll have to listen to them closer to find the connection.

    Kind words. Thank you.
