You just gotta love the always unpredictable Sonny Rollins. I picked this album up at a Salvation Army in 1987. What a great album this is. Ripped directly from the low-fi grooves of the 52 year old Verve Record disc, I present to your for our song of the week, the lead-off track, Grand Street.
Have you heard "Strode Rode" by Sonny Rollins - off Saxophone Collosus?
ReplyDeleteMy fave Jazz track of all time!!!

I couldn't agree more. That is killer. I particularly love the piano work of Tommy Flanagan on that song.
ReplyDeleteBack around 1994, I was walking on the campus of Brown University and a busker was playing Strode Rode. I sat and watched until he finished and I just said "Rollins, right?" "Oh yeah my brother" is all he said in response. Sublime. Every time I hear that song I am taken back to that moment.
For another great jazz album, check out Duke Ellington's Money Jungle recording with Max Roach and Charles Mingus http://ontheflip-side.blogspot.com/2009/05/song-of-week-ii-bs-charles-mingus.html
