Song of the Week: "Kid's Allright", Bettie Serveert

The amount of information I know about this early 90's band whom hailed from the Netherlands, could fill a thimble. I know the band name, Bettie Serveert, translates, roughly, as "Service to Bettie" and was taken from the auto biography of Dutch tennis player, Bettie Stove.

I love the rag tag production and the perfectly quirky arrangement of their song (our SoTW), Kid's Allright. Carol Van Dijk's vocals are buried and fuzzed, and the guitars come out of nowhere. These cats and their DIY production remind me of Television Personalities, whom we wrote about back in October of 2009.

Enjoy Bettie Serveert.

  1. one of the best songs of the 90's that hardly anyone has heard of...

  2. Count me as one of those hardly anyones. It's a good one. How did you come across it?

  3. Driving thru the darkened, rain soaked streets of Kansas City, a photographer friend plugged in his iPod to the car and this number came on.

  4. Blast from the past. I had this cd back then and even saw Bettie Serveert at the old 9:30 Club. There was quite a buzz about them around dc when this record came out. That first album was pretty good but i kinda lost track of them after that. I remember having a bit of a crush on Carol at the time.

  5. I like this more than I expected. Though I didn't know what, exactly, to expect, as I knew less about this band than Morgan. (I'd heard the name and believed they were a favorite of people much hipper than I.) I don't know if I could take a whole album, but this is really nice. I also found a live version that absolutely kills. Thanks for sticking this in my earhole.
