Cropper does seem a likely suspect for the guitar playing, though it doesn't sound like him, at least to me. I would guess it was Lonnie Mack except he was more northern (Ohio I think) and I don't know that he did much session work.

Do you know of another female artist that did "Time" during the same era? I remember the first time I realized that the Stones version was a cover was hearing it sung by a female artist, but I'd swear it wasn't Irma. Maybe the version I heard post-dated the Stones version.Mr. GeeBeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08971005418677101536noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4497209460362406306.post-34647489752094905002009-09-01T07:58:32.384-07:002009-09-01T07:58:32.384-07:00I don't think it is Ragavoy playing guitar as ...I don't think it is Ragavoy playing guitar as she recorded this down in New Orleans and he was up in Philly, for the most part. My first guess, before I knew where it was recorded, was Steve Cropper. Sounds like him, no?On The Flip-Sidehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07319364292191851993noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4497209460362406306.post-27844573205267773292009-08-31T19:08:12.350-07:002009-08-31T19:08:12.350-07:00As I'm sure you know, the Stones also covered ...As I'm sure you know, the Stones also covered "Pain in My Heart," which was Otis Redding's rewritten version of "Ruler of My Heart" that Irma did around this time.

That guitar part is great, and it's probably my favorite thing about the Stones version too. I wouldn't be shocked if Ragavoy played it himself (he was credited with guitar on that Mims song you wrote about before), but I don't know for sure.MikeMazzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05468951661272793528noreply@blogger.com
